Smart Dumpster Monitoring and Garbage Collection System

The project Smart Dumpsters Monitoring and Garbage Collection System demonstrates a prototype that can be integrated into the municipal waste management system. Our system consists of Arduino UNO ATMega328P, GSM module sim 900D, GPS (SKM53-SKYLABS), Optocouplers, LCDs and sensors. The level of garbage in the dumpster is detected with the help of Ultrasonic Sensor system (HC-SR04) that detects 3 different levels of garbage as Empty, Half and Full. An IR Flame Sensor is placed in the dumpster to get an alert about the fire in the garbage. These two sensors i.e. Ultrasonic and flame sensors, are connected to the ATmega328P Microcontroller. ATmega328P Microcontroller sends the alerts about the level and fire to the Interface and then to the Arduino UNO. This first Arduino UNO is also connected to the GPS and receives the co-ordinates of the location where the dumpster is placed. This Arduino sends the alert signals of level and fire to the other Arduino UNO along with GPS co-ordinates. The second Arduino UNO is connected to the GSM Module that is responsible for sending the alert/notification SMS and GPS co-ordinates SMS. This Arduino receives the level and fire alert along with GPS co-ordinates and send it to the GSM module where SMS are sent to the number programmed in the Arduino. In this way the level and fire alerts with GPS co-ordinates are communicated to the concerned person and actions are taken accordingly.
