Waste plastic in Oil through PYrolysis

The concern of solid waste management in Karachi is at its peak because of the ineffective collection, storage, and final disposal of municipal solid waste (MSW). Even though two landfill sites (which are near to saturation point) are dedicated for the disposal and recycling (which are also not frequently practiced due to financial and management lacking) of MSW, however, most of the MSWs are placed in the streets which cause severe environmental pollution. The presence of great amount of plastic waste in MSW accelerates the issue. It must be controlled through proper planning. In this review, various methods were compared for the conversion of plastic waste into valuable energy. Among them, pyrolysis was considered to be the most suitable method regarding the conversion efficiency. In the process of pyrolysis, long-chain polymers present in plastics are converted into smaller and less complex compounds. This process operates under pressure and tremendous heat but without the existence of molecular oxygen. As a result, a huge quantity of liquid fuels could be generated. Therefore, pyrolysis was selected, based on the extensive literature survey, which can be further improved after suitable process design and optimization according to local conditions.
