CMA CGM came into existence by the merger of CMA (Compagnie Maritime dAffretement) and CGM (Compagnie Generale Maritime) in the year 1999 and is now one of the leading container shipping companies in the world.

Though CMA CGM came into being only in 1999, its history dates back to 1978 when Mr Jacques R. Saade, the majority owner (98%) and the President of the company, founded CMA (Compagnie Maritime dAffretement). By the year 1995, CMA became the leading French carrier in containerized liner shipping. In 1999, the legal merger between CMA and CGM (Compagnie Generale Maritime) created CMA CGM \'The French Line\'.

The company started with operations in the Mediterranean, extending its services to the Arabian and Far East. A year later CMA CGM acquired ANL (Australian National Line) from the Australian Government and in 2002 it took over a UK company, Mac Andrews, to develop the Europe feedering. Today CMA CGM is a pure Container Line.
