Clinical Psychologist - Diagnoses and Treats Children with Mental, Behavioral, or Emotional Disorders.S/he considers aspects that influence a child’s mental, social, and emotional development. It involves the basic principles of clinical psychology combined with child, adolescent, and family development and developmental psychopathology. S/he focuses on scientific research and provides psychological services to infants, toddlers, children, and adolescents. S/he may perform a variety of clinical, research, and administrative tasks.

Essential Responsibilities:

  • Work with children and their primary caregivers to research, assess, and possibly treat developmental issues such as autism or pervasive developmental disorder.
  • Meeting with children and their family members to observe and diagnose concerns about a child’s mental or emotional state.
  • Administer personality or other psychological examinations for a slightly troubled child.
  • Use a multidisciplinary approach and work within the context of the child's life, for example, the family or school.
  • Help children and adolescents dealing with social problems like bullying, substance abuse, or high-risk sexual behaviors by providing education and counseling where required.
  • Help children and adolescents dealing with family-related issues, such as loss, illness, or divorce.
  • Collaborating with parents, teachers, foster mothers, or other clinicians involved in a case to implement child psychology treatment plans.
  • Working with elementary educators and school administrators to evaluate and revise learning environments to suit children with special needs.
  • Treat learning delays or psychological disorders such as depression or anxiety.
  • Researching disorders common among children and adolescents and devising new treatment strategies by helping children understand the consequences of disorders and avoiding bad habits.
  • Provide preventative services, such as developing and implementing programs to prevent substance abuse.

Skills:

  • Must always deal with children carefully and handle them with "kid gloves."
  • Should be compassionate, understanding, and patient when dealing with children.
